Daily routines for Christian business owners to help you stay motivated and inspired

As a Christian business owner, you face many of the same challenges as non-Christians. The difference between you and the non-believers is how you navigate these challenges.

As an entrepreneur, it’s important to have some daily practices or routines to help you stay motivated, focused and inspired.

We live in a world where there are so many distractions that it can be hard to stay focused.

One of the reasons many entrepreneurs struggle to accomplish their business goals is because they are easily distracted and chase after everything that comes their way.

But as a Christian business owner, it’s good to be disciplined and exercise self-control so you can run your business according to God’s word. Self-discipline is required if you want to grow your business and achieve your personal and spiritual goals.

And, one of the ways I have found to minimize distractions is to have some daily practices or a routine if you wish.

Now these are not rules you have to follow, and doing them doesn’t guarantee success. However, if you incorporate these daily practices into your life, you’ll see a difference in your business growth and your personal life.

So if you’re ready to grow as a Christian business owner, here are seven daily practices you can incorporate into your routine or schedule.

7 DAILY PRACTICES FOR CHRISTIAN BUSINESS OWNERS

1. SPEND TIME IN GOD’S WORD

As Christians, the Bible is our guide and our businesses should be rooted and grounded in God’s word.

God’s word should be the source of our wisdom and should guide us in making business decisions. But all too often, we neglect this very important practice because we are too busy with our daily tasks and reading the Bible has no place in our busy schedule.

I have been there and I have seen it with a lot of Christian entrepreneurs.

Spending time in God’s word shouldn’t be something we put on the back burner if we want to run our businesses according to Biblical business principles. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psa.119:105)

No matter how busy you are, reading the Bible should be a part of your daily routine.

When you take the time to read the Bible and listen to what God is saying to you through his word, you’re acknowledging the sovereignty of God over your business.

Remember we are merely stewards and God is the owner of our business, so we must take the time to hear from him and seek his face and guidance.

I know sometimes it feels like we don’t have enough time for everything we need to do, but if you make this a priority in your life, you will find the time even if it means waking up earlier than usual. When something is important to you, you’ll find the time for it.

Personally, I like reading my Bible first thing in the morning before life gets in the way. I usually spend the first fifteen to twenty minutes reading the Bible and meditating on God’s word.

I find my days flow better when I take the time to immerse myself in God’s word and let his peace flow over me (especially during tough times).

It’s also a good idea to have a pen and notepad handy when you read the Bible so you can make notes, or jot down a thought or idea that strikes you.

While I don’t mind reading the Bible on kindle or on my computer, I prefer reading a physical Bible because I can highlight some verses that really speak to me and make notes in the margins.

I use the ESV (English Standard Version) Bible and I really enjoy it,. I also use the King James version occasionally.

It doesn’t matter which version you prefer or whether you use kindle or a physical Bible, the only thing that matters is you spend time reading God’s word, and letting him speak to you through it.

2. DAILY PRAYER IS IMPORTANT TO CHRISTIAN ENTREPRENEURS

Along the same lines as reading the Bible every day, it’s important to make time to pray every day.

The Apostle Paul made this point with 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray without ceasing.”

As Christians, we are called to a life of prayer and faith. Prayer is a time of fellowship with God. It’s an expression of worship and adoration for the one true and living God.

While prayer shouldn’t be a time to make endless requests or demands, it’s certainly a time to invite God into your business and any challenges you may be facing. But, if the only time you remember to pray is to ask God for something, then you’re doing prayer wrong.

You don’t have to pray for hours each day, but you can certainly spend twenty or thirty minutes praying.

If you can’t squeeze out twenty minutes out of your day to pray, you’re probably too busy or not using your time very well. Perhaps it’s time to revisit your schedule and pay close attention to how you spend your days.

Prayer is a good way to commit your business to God, hold yourself accountable to him and ensure you’re walking in the truth.

If you struggle to pray daily, consider praying first thing in the morning before you start your day. Carve out twenty to thirty minutes every morning to pray and read the Bible.

Once you start doing this consistently, you’d be amazed how easily this can become a daily practice.

3. LIFT SOMEONE ELSE UP

Running a business (especially a new business) is very time consuming. Depending on the kind of business you own, you may find yourself working up to sixty or more hours a week.

When you spend so much time on your business, it’s hard to find the time to help someone else. But it’s a good thing to do, no matter how busy you are.

Each day, find the time or an opportunity to lift someone else up. Don’t think you have to do something big. Sometimes the simplest or smallest things can be life-transforming.

As a Christian business owner, you can lift someone up with a kind word, a smile, an email, text message or phone call. As an example, If you notice an employee looking a bit down, you can take a few minutes to check on their wellbeing and encourage them.

Do you know another business owner or a competitor who’s having a hard time? Give them a call or send them a message to encourage them.

Remember we are to build each other up. Don’t get so wrapped up in your own world or problems you shut everyone out.

If you look closely, you’ll always find an opportunity to do good.

So everyday, look for little opportunities to make someone else’s day better and see if that doesn’t make your day better in return.

4. DO ONE HARD THING

If you’re like me, you probably have a couple of things you have been putting off because they are too hard or you don’t like doing that particular task.

But, you can’t grow or reach your full potential if you keep avoiding the hard things!

What’s one thing you know you should be doing for your business but you’re too scared to do it? Is there’s something you know will help you take your business to the next level, but you are afraid to take the first step because you don’t want to fail?

You have to remember that faith without works is dead. Sometimes the only way to gain knowledge is to try and fail. So don’t be afraid of failing.

If you fail, you chuck it up as a learning experience and you pick yourself back up.

So what’s one thing you have been putting off?

Maybe it’s hiring your first employee or marketing your business. Perhaps, it’s reaching out to another business owner to collaborate. Whatver it is, I want you to stop running away from it.

Make it a daily practice to do one hard thing or complete a difficult task. When you do this, you’ll notice a difference in your mindset and business.

5. LEARN SOMETHING NEW EACH DAY

When was the last time you learned something new?

As a Christian business owner, you should be always learning because you can’t grow or improve without learning. “An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” (Prov. 18:15)

Being an entrepreneur provides you with a lot of opportunity to learn new things especially if you are operating with a limited budget and have to do a lot of things yourself.

You really can’t afford to be stagnant when you run a business. You’ve to be creative and innovative whether you want to stay ahead of the competition, mprove your products or create a better customer experience.

Unfortuantely, I see a lot of Christian entrepreneurs do not prioritize learning and acquiring knowledge, but they wonder why their businesses are stagnant.

A wise entrepreneur seeks knowledge.

You should always look for ways to do things better. Not out of discontentment, but a desire to improve and grow both as a person and a business owner.

This point is well stated in Proverbs 15:14: “The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.”

Don’t ever rest on your laurels or think you know everything there is to know.

Try to learn something new everyday. It can be for your personal growth or something that helps your business.

Learning and acquiring knowledge will take you far and keep you from making costly mistakes.

6. READ A BUSINESS BOOK DAILY

I used to read a lot when I was younger, but lately, I struggle to find the time to read as many books as I would love to.

However, I still find the time to read everyday no matter how busy I am.

I love reading and I use every opportunity I get to read a few pages of a book. Kindle books make it so easy to read.

Whether you’re in between tasks, waiting at the doctor’s office or whatever, you can always fit in some reading if you’re so inclined.

Being a Christian small business owner doesn’t mean you only read the Bible, Christian books or books by Christian authors. You can gain a lot of knowledge by reading a variety of authors and reading about different subjects.

However, as an entrepreneur, you should devote some time to reading books on entrepreneurship, books about successful business people (especially Christians) and books on Christian business management and leadership.

I am always fascinated when I read books about how some businesses began. Quite a lot of the big businesses we have around today had small beginnings, but their founders were hardworking people with big dreams and a vision for what was possible.

So what types of business books should you read?

There are lots of options depending on your interest and where you are in your business.

As an example, if you are a new business owner, read business books for new startups, books on running a business, marketing and sales books etc. If you’re looking to expand your business, read books for more experienced business owners.

There’s something for everyone, so there’s no excuse for not reading daily.

7. TAKE ACTION ON SOMETHING YOU LEARNED

Learning something new without taking action or putting it to use is a waste of time. Far too many people invest in learning without taking action.

One of the reasons many businesses fail is not because the small business owner didn’t know what to do, they failed because they refused to do what they were supposed to.

Lack of knowledge is bad, but refusing to act when you have the knowledge is even worse.

If you know you’re not going to practice something you learn, don’t waste your time or money on that training, course or resource because it’s not how much you know, it’s how much you do with what you know.

I am a big fan of learning but I haven’t always being very good at practicing what I learned, so I had to learn the hard way that change or growth only comes from taking action.

For instance, if you learn a new marketing tip, don’t expect to attract more customers to your business if you don’t use the tip. Similarly, if you struggle to retain customers, you have to use those customer-retention tips you learned about if you want to see a change.

So don’t be a hearer only, also be a doer. That’s how you make a difference.
