Some practical ways of showing you trust God with your business

Trusting God with your business is easy when everything is going well or according to plan. If I asked you whether you trust God with your business, I reckon you’d say “yes, of course.”

Like you, many Christian business owners claim they have faith in God when it comes to their business, but their words don’t align with their actions. And, this is true of many Christians, not only business owners.

Do you trust God when you’re faced with trials and tribulations? If you really trust God in your business, do you reflect it in your business practices? Is your faith only good as long as God answers your prayers and your business is booming?

These are some tough questions to answer, and like some of you, I wrestle with this issue from time to time. Both in my personal life and in business. So if you are going through the same struggle, you’re not alone.

If you’re having a hard time trusting God for your business, let me show you some practical ways you can demonstrate your trust in God.

TRUSTING GOD WITH YOUR BUSINESS: 6 PRACTICAL WAYS TO DO IT

1. DON’T MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON FEAR

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)

Raise your hand if you’ve ever made a decision based on fear or misinformation. I am ashamed to say I have been guilty of this several times. Whether it’s selling off stocks, relocating to a new area, or avoiding certain routes, I have done it all.

The thing is, when you allow fear to rule your heart or influence your decisions, you’re no longer walking in faith or trusting God for your business.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and like a lot of people, Christians aren’t immune from them. We are just as susceptible to fear and lies just like anyone else.

But, we must resist and stand against fear. We can’t allow fear to rule us or guide our decision making if we truly believe God is the owner of our business. Our decision making must be guided by God’s word, fact, faith, hope, and love.

If you want to thrive in business (or in life generally), you must learn to walk by faith.

Now, walking by faith doesn’t mean being foolish or acting recklessly. Walking by faith simply means doing your due diligence, researching, gathering as much information as you can about a topic, then stepping out in faith, and making the best decision that you can for your business.

Yes, you are going to get it wrong some times, but that shouldn’t deter you.

When you put your faith in God, you don’t jump in and out of business ventures because you’re afraid of what’s going to happen. Trusting in God means relying on his word and the Holy Spirit, then making evidence and fact-based decisions for your business.

2. DON’T COMPROMISE YOUR INTEGRITY

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36)

Just like every business owner I know, I would like my business to be successful and profitable. I would also like to see the reward for my hard work. However, I understand that there are no shortcuts to success especially if I run my business with biblical principles.

As a Christian entrepreneur, I strive to glorify God in my business, and one of the ways I do it is by being honest. There are lots of shady practices I can use to expedite the growth of my business, but at what cost?

How can you say you trust God in your business, yet you don’t trust him to provide for you or meet your needs? Trusting God with your business means you trust him to reward your faithfulness. Because you know if you keep working hard on your business, sooner or later, you’ll see the results you desire.

You don’t have to compromise your integrity to be successful. No need to lie, cheat, or undercut others in a bid to make more money. Nothing says “I don’t trust God” more than cheating or lying your way to success.

So think about it. Have you compromised your integrity because you wanted to make more money? Have you partnered with the wrong people because they helped you earn more money? Do you lie or cheat to get ahead financially?

If you truly have faith in God, you won’t ever feel the need to compromise your integrity for material gain. Because at the end of the day, you’re not working to gain the whole world, but you’re working to please God and further his kingdom.

3. DON’T QUIT AT THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE

First, let me say that there are times when the best course of action is to let your business go, but it isn’t an easy thing to do. It hurts when a business fails, that’s why lots of entrepreneurs hang onto failing businesses longer than is necessary.

On the other hand, many business owners quit at the first sign of trouble because they don’t want to invest any more time trying to make their business work. For a Christian, I don’t think this is the right way to display your trust in God.

When you truly trust God with your business, you show up and do the work no matter what. You remain diligent and consistent while holding onto God’s promises.

You don’t stop showing up for work or abandon your business because things aren’t working out (I did this a lot when my faith was shaken). Instead, you remain productive and continue to take action even when the results aren’t visible.

It’s easy to say you are trusting God for your business when you are not faced with any obstacle. But, the true test of your faith is what you do during tough times.

Will you continue to obey God? Will you continue to think God is sovereign over your business, or will you start thinking he’s failed you? When you’re faced with business challenges, will you continue to take action or call it quits?

What you do when business is slow is a true reflection of what you believe about God and your business.

I have had lots of opportunities to quit since there have been times when nothing seemed to work. But, I know God is faithful, and if I hold on just a little bit longer, he’s going to turn my circumstances around. That’s how you demonstrate your faith in God.

4. STOP WORRYING AND KEEP A PEACEFUL HEART

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3)

I am a born worrier. If there’s something to worry about, you can be sure I’d find it!

The funny thing is, time and time again, I have seen God work in my life you’d think by now I would have learned not to worry. But that isn’t the case at all. I need to constantly remind myself that worrying isn’t of God, and I can’t change anything by worrying. Alas! This is easier said than done.

I know God is faithful, and I believe he’ll do what he has promised, that’s why I keep working on myself and asking the Holy Spirit to help me cease from worrying.

The best way I know to stop worrying is to read and meditate on God’s word. Focus on his blessings and recall all the times he came through for me.

If you’re a Christian entrepreneur who’s trusting God for her business, you must stop worrying and cultivate a peaceful heart. You can’t trust God and spend all your time worrying about what is going to happen to you, or your business.

Instead of worrying, commit everything into God’s hand, do your part, and wait for him to do his, in his time. Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:27 “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” The answer is a resounding no!

So the next time you feel an urge to fret or worry about your business or future, remember that worrying is an exercise in futility and a waste of time. Stop fretting about things you can’t control.

5. BE FAITHFUL WITH YOUR FINANCES

How you handle your finances (personal or business) is a good indication of whether you trust God or not.

Do you handle your finances like a good steward, or do you manage your finances without accountability? Are you faithful in your giving when you’re faced with financial challenges, or even when your business is booming?

Often times when people are faced with financial challenges, the first thing they do is to stop giving to God. I have done this in the past, and I know many Christians who did the same thing. I know there are times when things are so bad that it feels like you have no other option, but there are times when the reason is lack of trust.

We don’t trust God to meet our needs so we figure we have to take care of ourselves. We stop thinking that our money belongs to God, and we are merely stewards.

When we stop trusting God with our finances, it becomes a bit hard to trust him with other parts of our lives because our financial life is one of the most important aspects of our lives. So if you really want to demonstrate your faith in God, you must be faithful with your finances.

Being faithful means you are mindful of how and what you spend your money on. You don’t waste the resources that have been entrusted to you. You’re prudent and wise with money.

Trusting God with your business means you don’t worry too much about your business finances or stop giving to the Lord’s work.

When you’re walking in faith, you are generous with your resources. You don’t operate under a scarcity mentality. Now, that doesn’t mean you become impulsive or careless with your finances, it just means you’re walking in peace, knowing that God is able to supply all your needs.

6. MAKE TIME FOR REST AND SELF-CARE

“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” (Psalm127:2)

If you’ve ever experienced burnout for one reason or the other, then you know the importance of self-care, and taking time to rest and recharge your batteries.

I am the first person to tell you that you need to work hard and be ready to make sacrifices if you want to succeed in business. However, you need to learn to do things in moderation. If you burn yourself out, you won’t be able to work on your business or make it successful.

Far too many entrepreneurs ignore their health in their quest for success. This is very detrimental to their overall wellbeing, so please don’t ignore self-care. Have a plan for rest and exercise so you can stay healthy.

When you put your trust in God, you know you don’t have to work round the clock to be successful because “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1)

So take a break, rest, spend some time with your family, read a book, go on a holiday if you can. Work will still be there when you get back.

It’s not by power nor by might my friends.
