When you hear “glorifying God through your business,” what comes to your mind? Do you feel like you need to do something special to honor God, or do you understand glorifying God is as simple as living like a Christian and doing God’s will?

Many of us have a penchant for complicating things and making them harder than they need to be. I have found this to be true both as a parent, and an entrepreneur trying to do the will of God’s for her business.

But, honoring God in your business doesn’t have to be complicated. Involving God in your business should be something that comes naturally to you. You don’t even need to spend a lot of time thinking about it if you’re committed to doing what is right and pleasing to God.

However, I know there are some of you who’d like to know some practical ways of glorifying God through business. So if you’re one of them, this post is for you. 1. RECOGNIZE THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST OVER YOUR BUSINESS

How do you recognize the lordship of Jesus Christ over your business?

You can do this by acknowledging his ownership over your life and business, and giving up your personal rights. When you recognize the lordship of Jesus over your business, your motto becomes “not according to my will, but according to your will.”

One sign of someone who’s completely yielded to Christ is unreserved obedience to his word and his will. Yes, total obedience can cost you in some ways, but that’s okay because you’re focused on eternal reward, and doing the will of him that sent you.

Acknowledging the lordship of Jesus Christ means you no longer struggle to apply God’s business principles. You accept that as a Christian entrepreneur, God and business success are intertwined and can’t be separated.

However, before you can recognize the lordship of Christ over your business, you’ve to be completely dedicated to him. Your life must be all about pleasing him. You must have complete faith in him because you know that he’s God, and he’s good.

That’s the starting point of glorifying God through business. You can’t honor God unless you accept his ownership of your life and business.

2. ALWAYS DO WHAT YOU KNOW IS RIGHT

“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17)

As a Christian business owner, I must admit, it’s becoming increasingly harder to do what is right because of fear of pushbacks, or financial loss. At the same time, we have Christians who know what is right but have absolutely refused to do what is right for one reason or the other.

Here is the thing. You can’t glorify God in your business if you thumb your nose at him or disregard his commandments.

Deep down, we all know what’s right and what is wrong. A lot of what is wrong in the business world, and the world at large isn’t due to ignorance but willful disobedience, and a lack of commitment to the truth.

Many of you have sold out your souls to achieve success and financial gain. You no longer care who you hurt in the process. Your policy is “if it feels good to me, then it must be right.” But, remember the words of Jesus in John 8:32, “and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” So ask yourself, “am I truly free?” “Am I walking in the truth?”

Do you glorify God with your business practices? When you pay your employees or contractors peanuts while raking in a lot of profit, are you doing what is right? When you hand in subpar work to your clients and pretend it’s the best they can get, are you being honest?

Do you always do what you know is right or does this change depending on the circumstances?

These are questions only you can answer. Search your heart and see if there’s any sin in it. Be like the Psalmist in Psalm 139: 23 who said “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts” and the prophet in Lamentations 3: 40 who cried “Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the Lord”

3. KEEP YOUR PROMISES AND FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOUR ACTIONS

What’s your word worth? When you make promises in your business, do you follow through with your actions? Can you be trusted?

Do your marketing and advertising materials really reflect what you’re selling or are they misleading? Do you promise one thing, then deliver something else? If you’re a service-based business, do your clients trust you to perform a task to their satisfaction, or complete a job at the stipulated time?

As a Christian entrepreneur who seeks to glorify God with her business, it’s really important to follow through on your commitments.

If you struggle to keep your promises, ask yourself why. Are you overpromising? Are you taking on more work than you can realistically complete? Do you have a problem saying no to things even when it’s clear you won’t be able to deliver on your promise?

I know that many of you have good intentions and don’t mean to break your promises, but good intentions aren’t always enough especially when your reputation is at stake. Sadly, that’s just how things work.

So if you are committed to honoring God in your business, you must learn to keep promises. It doesn’t matter whether it’s promises to your customers, spouse, kids, employees, bank, creditors or business partners.

You must be a man of your word, so don’t be too hasty when making promises or giving guarantees. Always double check that you can deliver on a promise before you make it.

4. KEEP LEARNING AND STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE

One of the things I have learned as a Christian is the importance of taking pride in my work. Continually improving and striving for excellence is one of the ways I glorify God through in my life and business.

Now, I know some of you can be overly critical of your work because you struggle with perfectionism, but that isn’t what I am talking about here. There are times when done is better than perfect, but many people don’t get that, so they fail to achieve their potential because they are waiting for everything to be perfect.

But life isn’t always perfect so we must make do with what we have. We can’t put things on hold because they are not perfect. Instead, what we should do is to keep working hard, learning, and improving. Keep trying to be better at what we do.

When we strive for excellence, we honor and glorify God because we are putting the gifts he’s given to us to good use. We are trying to maximize our potential. Knowing that you can always improve on something is a great way to stay on your toes and never let yourself or your business become stagnant.

Learn new ways to improve your products or services. Be creative and innovative. There’s always something new you could be learning. Whether to make something faster, simpler or to make your business more efficient or profitable.

It’s never been easier to gain knowledge, so take advantage of all the wonderful learning resources out there, whether it’s books, courses, podcasts, etc. There’s no shortage of learning material for someone who really wants to improve themselves.

Striving for excellence is a perfect way of glorifying God in business.

5. TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS AND PEOPLE AROUND YOU WITH KINDNESS

“A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself.” (Proverbs 11:17)

One of the biggest mistakes I have made is not valuing the people around me enough, and taking them for granted. Don’t be like me.

It’s easy to take people for granted whether we are talking about your long-time customers or employees, family members or friends. But, this is a big mistake. You should value your relationships and don’t take them for granted. Because it’s very hard to rebuild broken relationships or make new ones.

So take care to treat your customers and people around you with kindness. Let them know they are valuable to you and your business, and you care about their needs.

Don’t neglect relationships that help your business to stay alive. Look for ways to show your appreciation. Little displays of kindness can go a long way to strengthening relationships. But most importantly, you honor God when you follow his commandment to be kind to others.

We see this in Galatians 6:10 “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” and Colossians 3: 12 “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.”

When I say you should help others when you can, I don’t mean you should only help others when it’s convenient for you. Sometimes acts of kindness and love are inconvenient but we do them because it is right and pleasing to God.

One of the most effective ways of building a tribe of loyal customers and employees and even friendly competitors is to be of service to others. Helping others especially when you don’t expect anything in return, or there isn’t anything in it for you, is a great way to foster trust and build long-lasting relationships.

So don’t shy away from lending a helping hand when it’s within your power. Be generous when you can, knowing you’re glorying God in your business, and helping others in their time of need.

In Philippians 2:4, we are told “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” This is contrary to what many people in business believe or teach. Some think the only way you can be successful is to be ruthless. But we are not of this world. We don’t operate under worldly principles, but God’s business principles.

So help others when you can. It’s a good thing and it pleases your father in heaven.

7. OFFER QUALITY PRODUCTS OR SERVICES

I don’t know about you but whenever I receive an email or some other form of positive feedback from a customer, I am usually very ecstactic.

It warms my heart to know that something I created made someone happy. It’s satisfying to know that I created something that someone found useful and valuable.

Compare that feeling to someone writing to tell you they think your product is a rip-off or useless. Or that your premium course or coaching package was basic, and didn’t deliver what it promised. Ouch!

No one wants to be in that situation, that’s one of the reasons we should invest in learning and strive for excellence.

When we offer quality products or services to our clients or customers, we honor God through our work and our talents. We are also saying to our customers, we appreciate you. You’re valuable and I am happy to serve you.

The word of God tells us that whatever our hands find to do, we should do with all our might. Yes, this means we should be diligent, but it can also refer to the quality of our work.

What you offer matters, so take the time to make sure you offer high quality products, and superb services that bring praise and honor to God.
