A lot of entrepreneurs don’t think they can learn about selling from the Bible, yet the Bible can teach us a lot about selling and marketing. A sales cycle that’s customer-focused is the best way to achieve your goals. A customer-focused experience can only be achieved when you listen to what your potential customers have to say.

We have all experienced it. A salesman that’s so intent on expressing his opinion or getting the sale he doesn’t listen to what you have to say. He comes in with his sales speech and won’t let you get in a word edgewise because he’s trying to convince you to buy whatever he’s selling. “The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.” (Proverbs 10:7)

Like some of you, I like to give people or businesses a fair chance and not prejudge them. Unfortunately, some people’s or company’s reputation precedes them, so it’s hard to ignore it.

The Bible says that “a good name is better than riches,” this is a warning everyone should heed especially if you’re trying to build trust. Whether you like it or not, fairly or unfairly, your customers are going to judge you based on your reputation.

Most people prefer to buy from businesses they know, like, and trust, so make sure you guide your reputation. Don’t jeopardize your reputation or integrity trying to make a quick buck. You’re more likely to get a sale if your potential customers trust you.

One of the most important biblical sales principles is to be known as an entrepreneur who keeps their word and delivers on their promise, no matter what. Your reputation is worth more than gold so guide it and treat it as something precious.


“For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:14)

Like Jesus said in Matthew 22:14, “many are called, but few are chosen,” similarly, while it’s okay for your marketing message to resonate with lots of people, you need to have a system in place to whittle down your prospects.

One of the reasons some entrepreneurs struggle with selling is because they are trying to sell to the wrong people. Since you can’t convince anybody of anything, it’s better to focus on selling your products to the people who need them. That’s why qualifying the lead is very important to the sales cycle.

The easiest way to qualify the lead and find the right customers for your products or services is to have an effective system for prospecting and marketing. How do you attract your customers? Are you targeting the right people or just throwing things out there to see what sticks?

If you believe you have a good product that people need, then it’s your duty to tell them about it. As a matter of fact, it would be unfair for you not to share your creation or knowledge with the world.

So if you have any doubt whatsoever about your offerings, work on making them better so you can be more confident. As a Christian entrepreneur, your job is to help people, so you owe it to yourself and others to create, produce, or offer the best things out there.

Far too often, many entrepreneurs focus on the features of their product when the most important thing to your customer is how your product would benefit or help them. Your customers want to know what is in it for them, so you need to learn to lead with that.

You can see that in the Bible verse above where Jesus promises rest to those who come to him. Rest is the transformation you should expect when you come to Jesus. Selling the transformation is one of the most important sales lessons you can learn from the Bible.

So what if instead of telling your prospects all the features of your product, you tell them what changes they can expect after they buy from you? For example, if your product is going to help them sleep better, learn a language faster, or become a better parent, that’s what you should focus on selling.

The real reason people buy is because of the implied transformation or improvement your product or service will give to them. That’s why it’s important you believe in what you are selling because when you truly know and believe in your product, it’s easy to communicate the benefit to your prospects.

So think about how your product will transform lives and make that front and center of your sales strategy. Your customers need a reason to buy. They want to feel good about themselves after buying from you, so make it easy for them by selling the transformation instead of the product.


“For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” (Romans 16:18)

Give your prospects the freedom to say no if they are not ready to buy. This lesson is one of the best biblical sales principles to follow if you want to cut down on returns and refunds.

I have come across some very pushy or manipulative business owners who didn’t want to take “no” for an answer. These people were determined to get a sale and they had a counter for all my objections. Thankfully, I am not easily swayed so I was able to resist the pressure.

I am aware that not everyone can stand their ground against very aggressive sales tactics, so please don’t force your prospects to buy something they don’t want or need. Give them the freedom to say no and to walk away if that’s their wish.

Don’t manipulate your prospects by telling them a product or offer is about to run out or won’t be available again if that isn’t the case. As a Christian, always use biblical principles of marketing and advertising even if it means losing out on some money. I know this is a tough thing to do, but God will reward you for your faithfulness.
